A modern LA wedding with elevated minimalism and main character energy

Sophie and Kris planned a modern LA wedding that felt premium, intentional, and somehow completely effortless at the same time. Think retro tennis club architecture, clean mid-century lines, black and white everything, and a skyline ceremony that genuinely stopped people in their tracks.

Their vibe was crystal clear from the start. As Sophie put it, “Our overall vibe was elevated minimalism. We wanted something premium and nice but not over the top.”

Which, honestly, is harder to pull off than people think.

They chose black and white because it felt timeless and classy. No trendy palette, no chaos. Just strong design choices and confidence. It worked.

Why the ceremony was the emotional high of this modern LA wedding

Public vows. No regrets.

When I asked Sophie what stood out most, she didn’t hesitate.

“The ceremony was hands down my favorite part of the day. I’m not a public speaker, but getting the chance to say my vows in front of my family and friends was so powerful.”

Sophie said, “The second the ceremony was over, Kris and I turned to each other and said ‘can we do that again?’ It was such an amazing moment!”

How does a retro tennis club create the perfect backdrop for a modern LA wedding?

Mid-century modern meets clean editorial

The setting had that unmistakable mid-century modern tennis club vibe. Clean lines. Open sky. Architectural angles that photograph beautifully without needing much styling.

Black and white design against that structure felt intentional, not themed.

And because the aesthetic stayed minimal, the focus stayed on Sophie and Kris. On their people. On the actual energy in the room.

That’s what makes a candid wedding photographer approach so powerful in spaces like this. The design holds steady, and the moments do the moving.

If you love portraits that feel artistic but still grounded, you can explore more of that style here.

Elevated minimalism done right

Sophie said it best: “To carry that vibe throughout the space and evening, we went with primarily black and white colors, with accents of green and silver in the chairs.”

It was intentional. White roses, baby’s breath, eucalyptus layered between bouquets. Clean lines. Silver chairs adding a subtle sheen. The ceremony arch was draped in white linen with florals woven in, and with the blue sky and city skyline behind it, Sophie described it as “almost angelic.”

It really did feel that way. Like someone took mid-century modern architecture and gave it a soft, cinematic glow.

Retro tennis club energy, but make it chic.

The dance floor. Always the dance floor.

Sophie gave advice that I fully endorse: “Don’t leave the dance floor ;)”

And they didn’t.

Once the formalities were done, it was game on. Elevated minimalism turned into elevated chaos in the best way. Black and white outfits under reception lighting. People from every era of their lives colliding in one room.

Sophie said something that really stuck:
“It’s an amazing feeling having people from every aspect of your life in one room together to celebrate you – make sure to soak up every minute!”

That’s the whole thing.

Not the napkins. Not the chair spacing. Not whether the florals leaned slightly more ivory than white.

The people.

Sophie’s advice for planning a modern LA wedding

Type-A brides, this one’s for you

Sophie is self-described Type-A. Organized. Structured. On top of things.

And yet, she said: “On the day of my wedding, I truly wasn’t stressed. I have confidence in my vendors and knew everything would go as planned.”

Her advice:

“Plan early, stay organized and hire people that you trust! You can never start planning early enough! Also, don’t sweat the little things. Small details end up being things that none of your guests even notice. Focus on the big picture and just having a great time with your partner and family and friends.”

It’s practical. It’s grounded. It works. And honestly, that’s the secret behind every smooth modern LA wedding.

Let’s talk about your modern LA wedding

Sophie and Kris proved that a modern LA wedding doesn’t need a dramatic color explosion or over-the-top styling to feel iconic. Black and white. Clean florals. Skyline ceremony. A retro tennis club backdrop. Real vows. A dance floor that stayed full.

Elevated minimalism. Zero fluff. Maximum presence.

If you’re looking for a Los Angeles wedding photographer who blends documentary instinct with strong editorial composition, and you care about real moments just as much as beautiful ones, let’s talk.
