A Candid & Playful Gray Whale Cove Engagement Session

Awww Jocelyn & Nathan are SOOO cute! We had such a fun time with them, and we’re so glad they chose Gray Whale since it’s a place that’s really meaningful to their relationship. They spend a lot of time there, so they knew the area well, which made exploring the location really easy. They actually arrived a little early, and since we were all there and the clouds were starting to roll in, we decided to get started ahead of schedule to play it safe with the weather. It ended up being absolutely gorgeous!

Jocelyn wanted to start with photos up in the trees and along the cliffs before heading down to the beach, so we did exactly that. From there, we made our way down to the sand where I incorporated lots of movement, walking, running, and piggyback ride prompts, before they changed outfits. Their dynamic is the sweetest! They joked throughout the session that Jocelyn “wears the pants” in the relationship, and I picked up on that almost immediately. During the piggyback photos, she insisted on carrying Nathan too, which was hilarious and adorable. She mentioned she was a swimmer in college and it showed 💪🏻

When I say they were down for anyyyything, I mean anything! After changing into the next outfit, we found some cool rocks to walk up and along and they were both so down! They even said they were down to get wet so we did at the end! After changing into their second outfits, we climbed out onto some of the rocks, and they didn’t hesitate for a second. They even told us they were completely fine getting wet, so we saved that for the end. I had them posed near the shoreline when a wave came crashing in and completely soaked them. Their genuine reactions were priceless! Instead of stopping, I leaned into the moment and had them run along the sand as the waves rolled in. It was so messy & fun!

Their story is SO cool: they met on Hinge, but discovered they had grown up in the same area. They actually attended rival high schools, both played sports, and somehow Nathan even ended up in Jocelyn’s yearbook. Such a small world!
